House of Caring: Indigenous Led Primary Care

Initiatives and Actions

Select Topic:

Canada's legacy of colonialism includes Indigenous-specific racism in medical care, including segregated Indian hospitals, medical testing, and denial of health care causing harm and even death. Although there are on-going efforts to address this legacy, the challenges remain immense including addressing the massive disparities in access and quality of care for Indigenous peoples. For many years, Golden Eagle Champions has been volunteering its time to advocate for Indigenous patients within the medical system.

This work has taken diverse forms from being there to hold someone's hand while they are experiencing traumatic circumstances, to directly advocating for care, to assisting individuals in navigating through complex patient care complaint processes that are discriminatory and alienating. In addition to this on-the-ground advocacy, Golden Eagle has been involved in working toward systemic change in the medical system aimed at addressing the roots of the problems with Indigenous care.

We are a developing a transformative project that will work as a stop gap in providing culturally safe and appropriate care while the work of Indigenous Nations to advance a medical system that operates in accordance with their jurisdictions, laws, and cultural practices continues.
